New York, United States – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine and the United States want Russia’s war to end before winter following what he described as a “positive and productive” meeting with US President Donald Trump.
The two leaders discussed possible steps to de-escalate the conflict and reopen a path toward diplomacy during their meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Sept. 22.
“Both the United States and Ukraine want this senseless Russian war to end before winter,” Zelenskyy said in a statement after the meeting.
Zelenskyy did not disclose the specific de-escalation measures discussed or indicate whether a new proposal would be presented to Russia.
The meeting came as Ukraine sought an agreement to halt attacks on energy infrastructure before winter, when Russian strikes could again threaten the country’s power supply.
Zelenskyy said Ukrainian and American teams were also working on plans to launch the production of Patriot air-defense interceptors in Ukraine.
“This will help protect lives if Russia rejects negotiations and continues to bet on ballistic missile terror against our people this winter and beyond,” he said.
The two leaders also discussed a winter air-defense package for Ukraine, but Zelensky did not give details on what weapons or systems it could include.
Russia and Ukraine exchanged fresh strikes before the meeting, with attacks causing casualties and damage to civilian and energy infrastructure.
Zelensky thanked Trump, his administration and the American people for their support.The White House had yet to issue a detailed account of the meeting.
