Immigration Bureau backs expanded e-gates access

Metro Manila, Philippines – The Bureau of Immigration (BI) expressed support for Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon’s proposal to maximize the electronic immigration gates for all passengers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

During an inspection at NAIA Terminal 1 on Oct. 30, Dizon expressed dismay over the airport’s underused e-gates and said he would propose to Malacañang expanding access for passengers.

The bureau said Dizon’s proposal aligns with its initiative to broaden automated passenger processing at international gateways nationwide, as well as strengthening border security and foiling cross-border crimes.

“Wider e-Gate access must go hand in hand with reliable biometric verification and effective security checks. Our objective is not only to reduce queues but also to make immigration screening faster, smarter, and more secure,” Immigration Commissioner Joel Viado said.

The agency added that it has completed the first phase of its modernization program covering key provincial gateways, including Clark, Cebu, and Davao, while the second phase for other international airports is undergoing procurement proceedings.
