KYIV, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he and US President Donald Trump have agreed to meet in New York as diplomatic efforts to end the war continue.
Zelensky said the planned meeting could prove consequential, citing what he described as renewed momentum in the peace process.
“This meeting could change a lot. There is diplomatic momentum,” Zelensky wrote on X following a telephone conversation with Trump on Sunday.
Zelensky did not announce the date or venue of the meeting.
The White House had yet to release details about the planned talks.
The Ukrainian leader said he and Trump discussed the recent visit to Ukraine by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Advancing the peace process remains Kyiv’s top priority, Zelensky said.
The two leaders also exchanged proposals on possible de-escalation measures and what Zelensky called fundamental security issues.
Their discussion covered energy security, food security and the protection of civilian lives, according to the Ukrainian president.
Zelensky said Ukraine was prepared to continue coordinating with the US negotiating team and take “really serious steps” toward peace.
Ukraine has repeatedly sought firm security guarantees as part of any agreement ending Russia’s invasion.
The announcement of the New York meeting comes as Washington continues diplomatic efforts to bring Ukraine and Russia closer to negotiations.
