Moscow, Russia – Russia’s ruling United Russia party won 57.83% of the vote in the country’s parliamentary election with more than 95% of ballots counted, according to preliminary results announced Monday by the Central Election Commission.
The result would give the party 355 of the 450 seats in the State Duma, preserving its constitutional majority, according to the commission. Final results are expected Friday.
United Russia, which supports President Vladimir Putin, increased its vote share from 49.8% in the 2021 Duma election. The vote was the first parliamentary election since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Commission chair Ella Pamfilova said the Communist Party placed second with 13.81% of the vote, followed by the Liberal Democratic Party with 8.98%.
New People received 7.96%, while A Just Russia garnered 4.96%, according to the commission figures reported by Xinhua.
Turnout stood at 59.32% for the three-day election, compared with 51.72% in 2021.
Russia elects half of the Duma’s 450 members through party lists. Voters choose the other 225 in individual constituencies.
