Metro Manila, Philippines – Filipino travelers between Spain and Italy have been advised to prepare for possible border checks and delays as a dispute between the two European countries over irregular migration prompted the temporary return of controls within the normally border-free Schengen Area.
The Philippine Embassy in Spain said Italian authorities may conduct checks on travelers arriving from Spain at airports and seaports. Spain has also introduced checks on passengers arriving from Italy.
The measures followed a diplomatic row after about 72,000 migrants entered Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta on July 30. Italy imposed controls on travelers arriving from Spain on Aug. 1, citing migration and security concerns. Spain later responded with its own controls on arrivals from Italy.
The mass crossing into Ceuta followed weeks of increasing arrivals, with Spanish authorities blaming misinformation spread by criminal networks for helping fuel the surge. At least 94 people were confirmed dead following the July 29-30 crossing, according to Reuters.
Italy said its checks were targeted at non-European Union nationals arriving from Spain by air and sea and would not affect Spanish and other EU citizens. Spain, meanwhile, said its reciprocal controls would remain in place until Sept. 7.
The Philippine Embassy said Filipino travelers may be asked to present identity and travel documents during the temporary checks.
Filipinos were advised to carry a valid Philippine passport at all times.
Those residing or legally staying in Spain should also carry proof of their legal status, such as a Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (TIE), valid residence authorization or other applicable residence documents.
Travelers who require a Schengen visa should ensure that it remains valid and have other relevant travel documents readily available.
The embassy also advised Filipinos to allot additional time at airports and other points of entry because of possible checks and delays.
It stressed that the temporary controls do not mean travel between Spain and Italy has been suspended.
“The temporary measures do not mean that travel between Spain and Italy is closed. Flights and other transportation services continue to operate, although travelers may be subject to border checks upon arrival,” the embassy said.
