Filipinas end Vietnam’s reign in shootout to capture historic SEA Games gold

Metro Manila, Philippines – Another historic feat was achieved by the Filipinas as the Philippine women’s national football team claimed its first Southeast Asian Games gold medal on Wednesday, Dec. 17, in Thailand.

Olivia McDaniel made the game-winning save on a dramatic penalty shootout against four-time reigning champion Vietnam.

McDaniel caught the penalty shot of Vietnam’s Tran Thi Thu to seal the 6-5 win for the Filipinas following a scoreless contest at the end of regulation.

No Philippine men’s and women’s squad won a football crown in the regional sports tournament prior to this victory.

The triumph was a golden send-off to veteran goalkeeper Inna Palacios, who announced she is retiring from the national team after many years of service.

The Filipinas clobbered Malaysia, 6-0, to secure a spot in the semis then had to eliminate host country Thailand on penalties, 4-2, after a 1-1 tie to book a finals ticket.
