Metro Manila, Philippines – The death toll from the combined effects of Tropical Cyclones Luis and Maymay and the southwest monsoon has climbed to 23, disaster officials said Sunday, Aug. 16.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported that one person remains missing, while 17 others were injured.
Meanwhile, the nonstop rains have caused around ₱3.4 billion in infrastructure damage and ₱689.5 million in agricultural losses.
More than 4.8 million people, or around 1.4 million families, have been affected by the weather disturbances.
Disaster officials said 110,436 people were displaced from their homes due to heavy flooding that affected 1,086 areas.
The continuous downpour also triggered 39 landslides across Luzon. Many of the casualties were reported in these rain-induced landslides.
In Barangay Guisad Surong, Baguio City, 10 people, including five learners, were killed in a major landslide. Meanwhile, three people died in separate landslide incidents in Atok, Benguet.
The government has provided ₱654.6 million in aid to victims of the severe weather.
