2 dead, 1 injured in La Trinidad landslide amid heavy rains from ‘Maymay,’ habagat

Metro Manila, Philippines – Two men were killed and another was injured in a landslide in La Trinidad, Benguet, on Thursday morning, Aug. 6.

At around 8 a.m., a landslide buried part of a roadside eatery in Barangay Shilan, trapping the three men in the kitchen, said Elaine Lidab of the La Trinidad Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

Rescuers pulled a 55-year-old man from the rubble at around 9 a.m. and rushed him to Benguet General Hospital for treatment.

The two fatalities – a 66-year-old man and a 31-year-old man – were recovered from the buried portion of the establishment at around 11 a.m. They were declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

Heavy rains brought by Tropical Depression Maymay and the enhanced southwest monsoon, or habagat, have triggered a number of landslides, prompting local authorities to conduct clearing operations.

Benguet and a number of provinces remain under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1.
