Typhoon Tino death toll tops 200 – NDRRMC

Metro Manila, Philippines – The number of deaths from Typhoon Tino (international name: Kalmaegi) reached 204 as rescuers search for over a hundred others missing, the government reported Saturday, Nov. 8

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Cebu had at least 141 deaths, while the Negros provinces tallied 47.

There were also fatalities in Antique, Capiz, Iloilo, Guimaras, Bohol, Leyte, and Southern Leyte, as well as the six air force personnel killed in a chopper crash on a response mission.

Rescuers are racing against time to search for 109 missing people in Cebu and the Negros provinces .

The NDRRMC said 156 people were injured.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. issued Proclamation 1077 to declare a state of national calamity in the aftermath of “Tino” and in preparation for “Uwan” (Fung-wong), which was seen to intensify into a super typhoon.

“We are very, very sorry… Lahat kami nalulungkot dahil napakataas ng ating casualty figures, karamihan talaga ay dinala ng tubig,” Marcos said during his Cebu visit on Friday.

[Translation: We are very, very sorry. We are all saddened by the high casualty figures, most of whom died after being swept away by flash floods.]

In the NDRRMC report, Typhoon Tino affected nearly three million people, including 700,000 who were displaced.

Nearly 30,000 houses were damaged, according to the Saturday report.

Damage to infrastructure was at P17 million, and in agriculture P40 million.

A number of areas remain without power and communications.
