Metro Manila, Philippines – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has found former Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball coach Thomas Anthony “Tab” Baldwin and the university administratively liable for separate violations over the employment of foreign nationals.
It found that Baldwin worked for Ateneo without a valid Alien Employment Permit (AEP) from Dec. 1, 2015, to Sept. 28, 2016. Baldwin and Ateneo were each ordered to pay a fine of ₱10,000.
Baldwin was also found liable for failing to secure the required Certificate of Exemption for his subsequent employment.
For the 490-day period from Feb. 10, 2025, to June 15, 2026, he was assessed a ₱4.9-million administrative fine, computed at ₱10,000 for each day of violation.
Ateneo was held jointly and solidarily liable with Baldwin for the ₱4.9-million fine arising from the failure to secure the Certificate of Exemption.
DOLE also referred the matter to the Bureau of Immigration for summary deportation proceedings against Baldwin.
The labor department’s investigation on Baldwin’s work status stemmed from the June 8 team building in Dipaculao, Aurora that resulted in the deaths of student athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
Counsels for Baldwin and Ateneo said their clients would avail of legal remedies.
