Baguio landslide kills 10; DepEd mourns deaths of five learners

Metro Manila, Philippines – The death toll from the rain-induced landslide in Barangay Guisad Surong, Baguio City, has risen to 10, the city’s Public Information Office said on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

As of this writing, three people have been rescued from the rubble.

Five of the fatalities were learners. The Department of Education (DepEd) extended its condolences to the bereaved families of the students.

“With deep sorrow, we mourn the young lives lost: two Grade 7 learners from Guisad Valley National High School; one Grade 3 learner and one Grade 4 learner from Bonifacio Elementary School; and one learner under the Alternative Learning System (ALS),” the department said on Tuesday.

Search and retrieval operations remain ongoing as authorities continue to scour the rubble.
