Palestine thanks PH for joining walkout during Netanyahu’s UN address

Metro Manila, Philippines – The Embassy of the State of Palestine thanked the government for joining a walkout during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

“The Embassy of the State of Palestine expresses its sincere appreciation to the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the Department of Foreign Affairs for the principled position demonstrated by the Philippine delegation at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, including its participation in the walkout during the address of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,” the embassy said in a statement.

The embassy also welcomed the country’s expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, the advancement of the settlement plan, and the continuing rise of settler violence in the West Bank.

“The Embassy welcomes the Philippines’ expressed concern over the grave humanitarian situation in Gaza, the advancement of the El settlement plan, and the continuing rise of settler violence in the West Bank,” it said.

The embassy said the Philippine position reflects the country’s commitment to international law and peace.

“This position reflects the Philippines’ commitment to international law, peace, and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination and its continued support for the two-State solution,” the embassy said. The embassy also welcomed the country’s expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, the advancement of the settlement plan, and the continuing rise of settler violence in the West Bank.

In a text message to NewsWatch Plus, DFA spokesperson Analyn Ratonel said the walkout represented concerns over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and developments in the West Bank.

The walkout took place on Sept. 24 when Netanyahu took the podium at the high-level meeting.

“The Philippines joined the walkout in global solidarity for peace in the Middle East and the call for all parties to desist from unilateral actions that erode the conditions of peace,” Ratonel said.

She said such actions also undermine the viability of a future Palestinian state.

“The Philippines is deeply concerned about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and notes with alarm Israel’s efforts to advance the E1 settlement plan, and the continued rise of settler violence in the West Bank,” the DFA official said.

“These actions are detrimental to finding a just, lasting and comprehensive solution to the Middle East conflict,” she added.

Ratonel said the Philippines continues to support a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“The Philippines has always supported the two-state solution as the viable path to peace in the region,” she said.

The DFA had already expressed concern over Israel’s E1 settlement plan in a statement issued on Sept. 17.
