Metro Manila, Philippines — The Philippine women’s soft tennis team secured the country’s first medal at the 20th Asian Games after losing to host Japan, 2-0, in the semifinals at the Higashiyama Park Tennis Center on Sunday, Sept. 20.

The duo of Bien Zoleta and Princess Catindig were outclassed by Japan’s Rena Temma and Kiho Miyamae in the first match, while Christy Sañosa was overpowered by Ayaka Iwakura.

Shyryn Salazar and Hillary Paas’ match against Rio Maeda and Sakura Nakatani was not played after Japan completed the sweep.

It was the Philippines’ first medal in soft tennis since the sport became a medal event at the continental showpiece in 1994.

Zoleta will team up with Samuel Nuguit, while Sañosa and Sherwin Nuguit will compete in the mixed doubles on Monday, Sept. 21.

They will also compete in the women’s and men’s singles events on Sept. 22.
