Metro Manila, Philippines – Malacañang will not hold a press briefing on Sept. 21 as the country marks the 54th anniversary of the declaration of martial law.
Communications Secretary Dave Gomez said the New Executive Building, where Palace briefings are held, will be closed as part of security measures.
“NEB will be closed due to standard security protocols,” Gomez said.
Manila holiday
Sept. 21 is also being observed as a holiday in the City of Manila.
Several groups are expected to hold demonstrations in the capital to commemorate the anniversary and raise concerns over national issues.
The day also marks the official date of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos Sr.’s declaration of martial law in 1972.
PNP personnel deployed
The Philippine National Police has deployed 17,018 police and security personnel nationwide for demonstrations and other activities marking the anniversary.
The PNP said the deployment would ensure police visibility, readiness, and timely response in key areas.
Of the total, 8,553 personnel come from the National Capital Region Police Office.
The NCRPO placed its units under full alert status beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Sept. 18.
Full deployment in Metro Manila began on the evening of Sept. 19.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered police officers to exercise maximum tolerance, restraint, and professionalism during public assemblies.
“We are ready for the activities on September 21. Our job is to keep people safe while respecting their right to peacefully express themselves,” Nartatez said.
“Nakaantabay ang ating mga pulis, and I expect every personnel to exercise maximum tolerance, sound judgment, and professionalism,” he added.
[Translation: “Our police officers are standing by.”]
Nartatez urged participants to express their views peacefully and follow reasonable safety instructions.
The PNP also reminded the public to keep emergency routes and access points clear.
