Kyiv, Ukraine – Russia struck the locomotive of a passenger train traveling from Kyiv to Warsaw about two kilometers from Ukraine’s border with Poland on Sunday, but no injuries were reported among the 206 passengers on board.
Ukraine’s state railway company Ukrzaliznytsia said monitoring systems had warned the train crew of the threat before the attack, allowing precautionary measures to be taken.
The locomotive was hit in Ukraine’s northwestern Volyn region, according to Ukrzaliznytsia. The Kyiv Post identified the service as a passenger train connecting the Ukrainian and Polish capitals.
Poland’s PKP Intercity confirmed that the train was traveling from Kyiv to Warsaw with 206 passengers aboard when the strike occurred, Xinhua reported.
Despite the attack, no passengers or crew members were injured.
A separate site near the border was also damaged.
Valentyna Chernysh, spokesperson for the Volyn customs office, said a petrol station near the Yahodyn border crossing with Poland was damaged in the morning attack, according to Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne.
The reported strike occurred just around two kilometers from the Polish border, bringing the latest Russian attack close to the territory of Poland, a NATO and European Union member.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called for additional sanctions against Moscow following the strikes.
Russia had not immediately responded to reports of the attack.
