Jakarta, Indonesia – A passenger ship carrying 243 people that went missing in the Java Sea has been found, with around 110 people rescued and one confirmed dead as search operations continued Sunday, according to Chinese state news agency Xinhua.
The vessel was traveling from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan when authorities lost contact with it early Sunday, according to the South Kalimantan search and rescue office.
The ship had reported encountering bad weather during the voyage before communications were lost at around 2 a.m. local time.
Its last known position was about 80 nautical miles from a search and rescue dock in Banjarmasin.
Local media later reported that the vessel had been located. Around 110 of the 243 people on board had been rescued, while one person was confirmed dead.
The status of the remaining passengers and crew was not immediately clear.
The cause of the incident also remained unknown.
Search and rescue vessels and personnel were deployed to the area as authorities continued efforts to account for those who were on board.
Maritime authorities, the Indonesian navy and water police were also involved in the operation, according to Xinhua.
