Metro Manila, Philippines – The Department of Education in the National Capital Region (DepEd NCR) suspended face-to-face classes in public schools in Metro Manila from Oct. 13 to 14.
DepEd NCR made the announcement on Sunday, Oct. 12, amid increasing cases of influenza-like illnesses among students and personnel and the recent series of earthquakes that struck the country.
“[DepEd NCR] issues this advisory to ensure the continuity of learning while prioritizing the health, safety, and structural security of all public schools,” DepEd NCR regional director Jocelyn Andaya said.
Andaya said public schools in Metro Manila should implement alternative delivery modalities from Monday to Tuesday to give way for disinfection, sanitation, and building inspection.
Public schools in the region are directed to use the two-day in-person class suspension to prepare for the implementation of drills on earthquake preparedness and other emergency protocols.
They are instructed to reinforce health and safety practices among learners, personnel, and parents.
Andaya said private schools are highly encouraged to conduct similar measures.
Last week, the University of Santo Tomas also issued an advisory on influenza and influenza-like illnesses. The Adamson University temporarily closed its grounds over the weekend for deep cleaning and disinfection as it also observed a spike in flu cases.
Meanwhile, the Department of Health said that currently, the number of influenza-like illnesses at the national level is lower than last year.
“It is sound precaution for local and institutional health authorities to practice preventive measures to keep the numbers down,” Health spokesperson Albert Domingo said.
