Metro Manila, Philippines – The Autism Society Philippines (ASP) condemned the recent controversy involving the “Machong Chismisan” podcast that mocked Joshua Aquino, a person on the autism spectrum.
Aquino is the son of actress and TV host Kris Aquino, the youngest sister of the late President Benigno Aquino III.
“Making fun of persons with disabilities for views, laughs, or viral engagement is not automatically protected by the excuse of comedy. A person’s disability is not a punchline, and humiliation is not entertainment,” the group said in a statement on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
It pointed out that while not every offensive joke automatically constitutes a crime, “calling something comedy does not automatically excuse unlawful conduct.”
ASP reminded the public that acts of discrimination, abuse, and ridicule against persons with disabilities (PWDs) are punishable under Republic Act No. 7277 and as amended by Republic Act No. 9442, also called the Magna Carta for Persons with Disabilities.
“The Autism Society Philippines opines that the digital world is not beyond the reach of accountability. Free expression comes with responsibility. Build an audience through creativity, insight, and wit—not by stripping others of their dignity,” the group stated.
On the same day, the Pod Network, the producer behind Machong Chismisan, issued a brief statement on social media announcing the immediate termination of its contract with the podcast.
“We have formally terminated our contract with the Machong Chismisan podcast, and are consequently removing the show from the network, effective immediately,” the statement read.
