Metro Manila, Philippines – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed the law postponing this year’s barangay and sangguniang kabataan elections (BSKE) to November 2028, months after the general election in May.
In a Facebook post on Friday, Sept. 25, Marcos said signing Republic Act 12326 aims to provide more time for sitting officials to address the needs of constituents.
“Gamitin ang panahong ito upang mas pagbutihin ang serbisyo, tapusin ang mga nasimulang programa at mas tutukan ang pangangailangan ng bawat komunidad, pamilya at kabataan,” Marcos said.
[Translation: Use this time to better the services, finish the ongoing programs, and focus on the needs of each community, family, and young people.]
“Hindi ito dagdag na panahon sa puwesto. Dagdag itong panahon ng pananagutan sa taumbayan,” he added.
[Translation: This is not an additional time in the position. This is an added time to be accountable to the people.]
The BSKE will be held on Nov. 13, 2028. This is the second time the polls have been postponed.
