Metro Manila, Philippines – A magnitude 6.4 major earthquake jolted Sarangani, Davao Occidental at 12:14 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) initially measured the quake at magnitude 7, but downgraded it to magnitude 6.4 less than an hour later.
It said aftershocks are expected.
The agency added there was no tsunami threat, and it does not expect damage.
The General Santos city government suspended work in the public and private sectors and all classes following the quake.
Sarangani has also suspended classes at all levels province-wide.
Phivolcs recorded shaking in these areas:
+Intensity V (strong) shaking: General Santos City, South Cotabato
+Intensity IV (moderately strong): Kiamba and Malungon, Sarangani; Tupi, South Cotabato
On June 8, a destructive magnitude 7.8 earthquake shook Mindanao, killing over 100 people and injuring 1,300 others. The disaster also resulted in ₱1.47 billion in infrastructure damage.
