PAGASA: LPA enters vicinity of Puerto Princesa; to bring moderate to heavy rains

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 5) — The low pressure area (LPA) being monitored in Palawan entered the vicinity of Puerto Princesa City on Friday morning, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

According to PAGASA’s latest update, the weather system was spotted in its current location at 10 a.m.

The LPA may develop into a tropical depression within the next 48 hours, the weather bureau added.

If it does, it will be called \”Betty,\” the second tropical cyclone to enter the country this year.

Speaking to CNN Philippines, PAGASA weather forecaster Rhea Torres said the LPA is seen to bring moderate to at times heavy rains over parts of Palawan.

The state weather bureau warned affected residents of possible flooding and landslides because of the expected heavy downpour.

“The public and disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned are advised to take all necessary measures to protect life and property,” it added.

In an earlier update, PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja said the LPA is expected to reach the West Philippine Sea by Friday night. Over the weekend, it is seen to continue affecting parts of Palawan, he added.

Meanwhile, PAGASA is monitoring another LPA outside of the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

It was last spotted 1,365 kilometers east of Mindanao and is expected to enter the country’s weather monitoring area in the next few days.
