Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 21) — A Filipino was among civilians injured in Sudan amid fierce fighting between the Sudanese army and a paramilitary group, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed on Friday.
DFA Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega said the victim was “just grazed” and has already recovered.
This is the first reported case of a Filipino wounded due to the clashes, which have now dragged on for nearly a week after a ceasefire attempt between the military and the Rapid Support Forces failed.
De Vega did not identify or give other details on the victim, saying the latter wants to keep a low profile. Unverified reports earlier said the Filipino was hit by a stray bullet.
In its update on Thursday, the DFA said at least 86 Filipinos in the North African country have requested rescue or repatriation.
It added that based on the latest data gathered by the Philippine Embassy in Cairo, there are around 400 Filipinos in Sudan.
“In coordination with the Philippine Honorary Consulate in Khartoum, our Embassy in Cairo is preparing for an ATN [Assistance To Nationals] mission to Sudan to facilitate evacuation and provide relief goods to Filipinos there,” the department said.
