Tacloban City (CNN Philippines, January 2) — A New Year’s Day celebration in Tacloban City turned tragic after a wing van truck plowed into a residential area where a party was happening, killing two and injuring seven others.

Police investigation found that at around 5:05 p.m. on Jan. 1, a wing van truck was traveling on a curved portion of the Tacloban Bypass Road in Barangay 110 Utap, Tacloban City when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The truck crashed into two homes where nine people were celebrating the new year.

Two of the victims–Laica Encomio and Rhemy Cuizon, both 23 years old–ended up stuck under the vehicle.

Personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection and Tacloban rescue units extricated them from the truck, but the two died after they were rushed to the hospital.

The driver is now under the custody of the Tacloban City Police Office.
