UAAP: UP staves off Adamson to stay atop standings

Metro Manila, Philippines – The University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons took down the Adamson University Soaring Falcons, 82-70, in their second round clash to remain on top of the UAAP Season 89 men’s basketball tournament standings on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

James Payosing led the way for the Fighting Maroons with 15 points and five rebounds.

After bucking a slow start, UP unleashed a 26-point output in the second quarter to build a 14-point advantage at the break.

The Soaring Falcons cut the deficit to eight points in the third frame, only to see the Fighting Maroons answer back and extend their lead en route to their sixth straight win.

Rey Remogat and Dikachi Ududo had 12 points each, while Elliot Dimaculangan was the other UP player to finish in double figures with 11 points.

Matt Erolon paced Adamson with a game-high 20 markers and two boards.

The Fighting Maroons improved to 8-2 for a league-best record, while the Soaring Falcons fell to 4-6 for shared sixth with the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers.

UP will next battle the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles on Nov. 7 at the Big Dome.

Adamson, meanwhile, hopes to end its losing streak against the winless University of the East Red Warriors on the same day.
