PH monitoring Russia plague situation amid low epidemic risk

Metro Manila, Philippines – The Philippines is closely monitoring the reported plague situation in Russia as the World Health Organization (WHO) assesses the risk of an epidemic as low.

Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said Wednesday, Oct. 7,  that the Department of Health (DOH) is monitoring developments and taking appropriate precautions based on WHO recommendations.

“So rest assured, our fellow citizens… the DOH is focused on this, and whatever else needs to be done, they will do it,” Castro said during a press briefing at the Philippine Embassy in Singapore.

“So far, they are meeting the requirements to ease our fears regarding this plague happening in Russia,” she added.

The government gave the assurance following the sudden death of a laboratory technician at a research institute in Siberia.

The WHO said the risk of an epidemic in Russia remains low and there is no indication of a wider outbreak.

Russian authorities imposed strict quarantine measures at the research center and several neighboring medical facilities following the incident.
