Metro Manila, Philippines – Higher fares for traditional and modern jeepneys will take effect on Monday, Sept. 28, following approval from the Marcos administration, the Department of Transportation and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.

The minimum fare for traditional jeepneys will increase by ₱1, while passengers of modern jeepneys will pay an additional ₱2 for the first four kilometers.

For traditional jeepneys, the minimum fare will rise from ₱13 to ₱14.

The rate for every succeeding kilometer will increase from ₱1.80 to ₱2.

For modern jeepneys, the minimum fare will increase from ₱15 to ₱17.

The succeeding kilometer rate will rise from ₱2.20 to ₱2.40.

The adjustment was approved as drivers and operators face higher fuel prices and operating expenses.

The National Federation of Transport Cooperatives welcomed the decision, saying the new rates recognized the financial burden carried by drivers and operators.

“Ito ay pagkilala sa tunay na gastos at bigat na pasan ng bawat tsuper at operator sa gitna ng patuloy na pagtaas ng presyo ng langis,” the group said.

[Translation: This recognizes the actual expenses and burden carried by every driver and operator as oil prices continue to rise.]

The group appealed for public understanding, saying the additional fare would help support the daily needs of families dependent on the transport sector.

“Ang dagdag na piso ay hindi lamang numero, kundi pagkain, pampaaralan, at pambayad sa pangangailangan ng bawat pamilyang umaasa sa pagmamaneho,” it said.

[Translation: The additional peso is not merely a number. It means food, school expenses and payment for the needs of every family that depends on driving.]

The group said it would continue advocating fair fares and sufficient government support for drivers, operators and commuters.
