Habagat, tropical cyclone death toll reaches 29; over 6.5 million Filipinos affected

Metro Manila, Philippines – The number of casualties from the effects of Tropical Cyclones Luis, Maymay, and Neneng, and the enhanced southwest monsoon has climbed to 29, disaster officials said on Thursday, Aug. 20.

Most of these fatalities came from rain-induced landslides. The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) noted 40 of these incidents across the Ilocos Region, the Cordillera Administrative Region, CALABARZON, and MIMAROPA.

The OCD reported 19 injuries and three missing individuals.

According to the OCD’s latest situation report, total damage to infrastructure has reached ₱4.66 billion, while agricultural losses stand at ₱1.42 billion.

More than 6.5 million people or 1.8 million families have been affected by the severe weather systems, which continue to bring nonstop rains and heavy flooding to parts of Luzon.

Around 47,277 people are taking shelter in evacuation centers. The severe weather has partially damaged 1,882, and totally damaged 226 homes.

Light to moderate with occasional heavy rains are expected to persist over parts of Luzon due to Tropical Depression Neneng and its combined effects with the southwest monsoon.

Neneng is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Thursday afternoon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

Meanwhile, PAGASA is monitoring Tropical Storm “Saudel” outside PAR.
