Metro Manila, Philippines – Filipino mythical creatures take the spotlight in the newly released trailer for DreamWorks Animation’s “Forgotten Island,” a fantasy adventure inspired by Filipino culture and folklore.
The film follows lifelong friends Jo and Raissa, voiced by Grammy and Academy Award-winning artist H.E.R. and Filipino actress Liza Soberano, as they spend one final night together before life takes them in different directions. Their farewell celebration takes an unexpected turn when they discover a mysterious portal that transports them to the magical island of Nakali.
According to the trailer, the island is populated by creatures from Filipino folklore, ranging from friendly companions to dangerous adversaries. To find their way home, the pair must confront The Dreaded Manananggal, voiced by Tony Award-winning actress Lea Salonga, while trying to save the memories of their friendship.
The film is directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado and produced by Mark Swift, the creative team behind the Oscar-nominated animated hit “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.”
Joining the cast are Jenny Slate, Manny Jacinto, Dolly de Leon, Jo Koy and Ronny Chieng. The story also introduces Raww, a well-meaning weredog who helps Jo and Raissa navigate the dangers of Nakali.
DreamWorks describes the film as an emotional story about friendship, identity and growing up, centered on two best friends racing against time before they forget each other forever.
“Forgotten Island” arrives in Philippine cinemas on Sept. 23.
