“GCash assures accounts, funds still safe as SIM registration ends this\ \ week \n”

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 24) — Mobile wallet GCash denies reports circulating on social media regarding the supposed emptying of GCash accounts due to an “update” in connection with the deadline of SIM registration in the country on April 26.

“Hindi totoo ang mga kumakalat na mga post ngayon sa social media ukol sa di umano’y maaaring pagkawala ng laman ng GCash accounts dahil sa isasagawang ‘update’ kaugnay ng pagtatapos ng SIM registration sa bansa sa darating na ika-26 ng Abril,” GCash said in an advisory Monday.[Translation: The posts circulating recently on social media about the alleged emptying of GCash accounts due to the “update” that will be carried out in connection with the end of SIM registration in the country on April 26th are not true.]“Ayon ito sa GCash na mariin ding sinabi na hindi kailangang mag-panic at i-withdraw ang pera sa GCash dahil ligtas ang kanilang mga account,” it added.[Translation: This is according to GCash who also strongly stated that there is no need for users to panic and withdraw their money from GCash because their accounts are safe.]GCash, along with its parent company Globe Telecom, encouraged users to register their subscriber identity module (SIM) cards to stop the increasing number of scam cases in the country.The e-wallet said there are currently 79 million Filipinos using the GCash app.According to GCash, users who want to transfer their funds to a new number may create a new GCash account using their registered new number.

The registration of SIM cards is set to end on April 26.

According to the Department Of Information and Communications Technology, as of April 24 there were around 82 million registrants, comprising 49.31% of total users of major telco players DITO, Globe, and Smart.
