Metro Manila, Philippines – Filipino street food took home the Judges’ Award at a diplomatic culinary event in Canada’s capital, highlighting Philippine cuisine on the international stage.
The Philippine Embassy in Canada, represented by Chef David H. Vinoya, won the award at the 2026 YMCA Embassy Chef Showcase held April 16 in Ottawa.
The annual event gathered 15 countries, with embassies presenting signature dishes that reflect their culinary traditions, while promoting cultural exchange and supporting charitable causes.
The Philippine entry featured a “kanto”-themed concept showcasing popular street food, including beef tapa, chicken inasal, longanisa and pork barbecue, served with achara.
Organizers said the dish, presented as “D’ Original Mang David’s BBQ,” stood out for its execution, presentation, taste and creativity.
The judging panel was chaired by Canadian cookbook author Margaret Dickenson.
Philippine Ambassador to Canada Jose Victor Chan-Gonzaga said the goal was to showcase not just food but the everyday Filipino experience.
“We wanted to let Ottawa experience how Filipinos end their work days by eating comfort food at grill stations,” he said.
The embassy said its participation forms part of efforts to promote Philippine culture and cuisine abroad, alongside activities marking Filipino Food Month and Filipino Restaurant Month in Canada.
