Nepal disaster kills nearly 1,300 as thousands remain missing

Kathmandu, Nepal – The death toll from devastating floods, landslides and mudslides in Nepal has risen to 1,287, with another 5,083 people still missing, according to Nepalese police, as reported by the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on Friday.

The disaster, which struck on Aug. 26, destroyed villages, damaged roads and other infrastructure and forced thousands of people from their homes.

Authorities estimated damage to homes, property and infrastructure at around 387.5 billion Nepalese rupees, or $2.56 billion, WAM reported.

Around 7,500 homes were completely destroyed, while about 20,000 others will need to be rebuilt.

The latest figures underscore the scale of destruction more than a week after floods and landslides swept across parts of the Himalayan country.
