Metro Manila, Philippines – Seven members of the House of Representatives are pushing to amend the Constitution to lower the age requirement for president, vice president, and senators.

House Reps. Paolo Ortega, Jay Khonghun, Ernix Dionisio, Zia Adiong, Rodge Gutierrez, Lordan Suan, and Eduardo Rama filed Resolution of Both Houses (RBH) 2 on Wednesday, Sept. 3, calling for charter change via constitutional convention.

They want to bring the minimum age requirement for president and vice president from 40 to 35; and from 35 to 30 for senators.

“Thirty-eight years since the ratification of the Constitution, the Philippines has undergone major demographic and social shifts, with more than 52% of the population under the age of 30, reflecting a vibrant, dynamic, and increasingly educated youth sector,” the resolution read.

“This reform strengthens youth representation, promotes intergenerational leadership, and embodies the spirit of inclusivity, renewal, and empowerment of the next generation of leaders,” it stated.

The authors said their proposed age requirement will align the Philippines with other democratic nations.
