SSS offers emergency loans to members – Marcos

Metro Manila, Philippines –  President Ferdinand  Marcos Jr. said the Social Security System (SSS) is offering emergency loans to members this month to help them meet essential needs during times of crisis.

In a video message, Marcos said the emergency loan program is available to members while the country remains under a state of national emergency.

“Simula itong Disyembre na ito ay makakapagbigay na ang SSS ng tinatawag na emergency loan,” Marcos said.

[Translation: Starting this December, the SSS is providing what it calls an emergency loan.]

The president said the loan carries a 7 percent interest rate and includes a six-month moratorium on payments, allowing borrowers to defer amortization during the initial period.

“Sa unang anim na buwan hindi kayo kailangan magbayad para sa loan amortization para naman mapagaan ang inyong dala,” he said.

[Translation: In the first six months, you will not be required to pay loan amortization to help ease your burden.]

Marcos said members may use the loan to cover urgent expenses, particularly during emergencies.

He added that the government continues to coordinate with the SSS to expand access to safer and fairer alternatives to informal money lending.

“Imbes na pupunta po kayo sa ‘5-6,’ ay mayroon na kayong magagamit at ang babayaran lang ay seven percent lamang,” Marcos said, referring to the informal lending scheme known for high interest rates.

[Translation: Instead of turning to ‘5-6’ (usury) you now have an option with only a seven percent interest rate.]

On Nov. 6, Marcos declared a one-year state of national calamity under Proclamation 1077 following widespread damage from recent calamities and in preparation for possible natural disasters.

The emergency loan program forms part of the government’s effort to provide immediate financial relief to affected Filipinos.
