Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 4) — The Philippine General Hospital is calling on coronavirus disease survivors to donate their blood to help patients suffering from the viral illness recover.
Interested donors could visit the social media page of PGH-Blood Donor Center for more details.
The blood center also urged people to set an appointment before giving their blood to minimize physical contact among a large number of people, which is how the virus spreads.
Dr. Edsel Salvana, an infectious disease expert and a COVID-19 frontliner from PGH explained the recovered patients’ blood is rich in antibodies which could fight COVID-19. This, as the world races against time for the COVID-19 cure and vaccine.
The doctor added this is an old method of treating patients, which “works in a lot of diseases.”
According to the latest data from the Department of Health, a total of 57 people have recovered from the fast-spreading respiratory infection caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus or SARS-CoV 2 for short.
PGH has been operating as a COVID-19 referral hospital since March 30.
