Life got worse for 82% of adult Filipinos in the past year – SWS

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 5) – Four out of five Filipinos believed that their quality of life got worse in the past year, according to the latest survey by the Social Weather Stations (SWS).

In a survey conducted on Sept. 17-20, 82% of adult Filipinos saw a decline (losers) in the quality of their lives. Meanwhile, 11% said that their lives remained the same (unchanged) and only 6% said their lives got better (gainers).

The SWS said the resulting net gainers score for September is -76, which is considered as catastrophic (-50 and below).

The score is one of the worst trends in the survey history, having recorded -78 in May and -72 in July during the COVID-19 crisis.

Furthermore, the SWS said the net gainers score stayed catastrophic in all areas of the country: -80 in in the Visayas, -76 in Metro Manila, -75 in Balance Luzon, and -74 in Mindanao.

By educational attainment, the net gainers score is lowest among non-high school graduates at -83, followed by non-college graduates at -76, non-elementary graduates at -72, and college graduates at -64.

Meanwhile, the net gainers score is just as low among those with job as it is among the jobless. The survey showed that the score is at -73 among those employed, -77 for those who never had a job, and -79 among those who are unemployed at present.

According to the family’s experience of involuntary hunger in the past three months, the net gainers score is lower among those who are hungry at -84 as compared to the -72 among those who have not experienced hunger.

The non-commissioned survey was conducted through mobile phone and computer-assisted telephone interview of 1,249 adult Filipinos nationwide.

It has a sampling error margin of ±3% for national percentages, ±6% for Metro Manila, ±5% for Balance Luzon, ±6% for the Visayas, and ±6% for Mindanao.
