Palace ‘no reaction’ for now on Chinese envoy statement on Pelosi’s Taiwan visit

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 3) — Malacañang is hands off for now when asked for a reaction to the statement of Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian, reminding Manila to “abide by the one-China principle.”

The Chinese envoy made this statement as Beijing strongly opposed the visit on Tuesday of United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, which China claims as its province.

“There is no reaction. Usually, when it’s matters of international relations, we take time to study the matter and to not react immediately,” Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles said Wednesday.

“Loose words might affect relationships and they’re very difficult to rebuild, so we will take our cue from the Department of Foreign Affairs if such a reaction is even warranted,” she added.

Following Pelosi’s arrival in Taiwan, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said the trip would have a “severe impact on the political foundation of China-US relations.”
