Metro Manila, Philippines – The Department of Education said a fact-finding investigation is in progress on the deaths of two students in a fun run at Cauayan South Central School in Isabela on Saturday, Oct. 3.
In a statement, the department said it is determining the facts in coordination with the Cauayan local government and law enforcers.
“A fact-finding investigation is underway, including a review of the activity, safety measures, equipment used, and the roles of those involved,” DepEd said.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara extended his sympathies to the families of the two students.
He said the Cauayan Schools Division Office is coordinating with the local government to extend aid and assistance to the affected families.
“The safety and well-being of our learners and personnel will always be a top priority. Patuloy ang pagsisikap ng DepEd na matiyak na ang ating mga paaralan ay ligtas at maayos na lugar para sa pagkatuto at pagtatrabaho,” Angara wrote in a social media post.

The schools division office said it will take action to hold those responsible accountable.
In a separate statement, the school administration and parent-teacher association said the school is committed to the safety, welfare, and well-being of students.
“We recognize the importance of providing a caring, understanding, and supportive environment where learners feel valued, heard, and protected,” a part of the statement read.
DepEd advised the public to refrain from sharing unverified information pending a fact-finding investigation.
This is a developing story.
