Alex Eala falls to Chinese bet in shocker, settles for bronze in Asian Games

Metro Manila, Philippines – Alex Eala concluded her 20th Asian Games campaign after absorbing a tough loss to Wang Xiyu of China, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, in the women’s singles semifinals to take home the bronze medal on Thursday, Oct. 1, at the Higashiyama Park Tennis Center in Japan.

The world No. 18 Eala could not sustain the momentum she gained in the opening set as Wang found her groove and pounced on every opportunity in the succeeding games to complete the upset victory.

After losing the opening set, Wang quickly established a 5-1 advantage in the second set and never looked back as Eala was losing power with her swings.

Eala replicated her third-place finish from the previous edition of the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China in 2023.

Eala and partner Shaira Rivera earlier fell short in the women’s double in straight sets.

With Eala’s bronze and a pair of silver from Amaya Cojuangco and Juliana Candelaria, the Philippine now has a total of 21 medals in the quadrennial showpiece.
