Metro Manila, Philippines – DreamWorks Animation’s Filipino mythology-inspired film “Forgotten Island” opened at No. 1 in Philippine cinemas, earning P97.2 million during its opening weekend, Universal Pictures Philippines said Monday.
The film grossed P97,236,533 from Sept. 25 to 27, according to Universal.
The studio said the opening is the biggest DreamWorks Animation opening weekend in the Philippines and the biggest non-franchise animated film opening in the country.
“Forgotten Island” follows best friends Jo and Raissa, voiced by H.E.R. and Liza Soberano, who are transported to the mysterious island of Nakali after discovering a magical portal on their final night together.
The island is populated by creatures drawn from Filipino mythology and folklore, including the feared Manananggal, voiced by Lea Salonga.
The film also features Filipino and Filipino-American talents including Manny Jacinto, Dolly de Leon and Jo Koy.
“Forgotten Island” is directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado and produced by Mark Swift, the team behind “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.”
The film’s soundtrack also features Filipino artists, including BINI and SB19, according to Universal Pictures Philippines.
The studio said the film has received strong reviews, citing a 95% critics score and 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes as of Monday.
The film is now showing in Philippine theaters.
