Ateneo withdraws from Filoil Preseason Cup

Metro Manila, Philippines – The Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles are withdrawing their participation in the 19th Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup in light of the deaths of their two players, the league announced on Sunday, June 14.

The Blue Eagles have begged off from the annual basketball tournament which features teams from the University Athletic Association of the Philippines and the National Collegiate Athletic Association, nearly a week after Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili drowned during a team building activity sanctioned by the school in Dipaculao, Aurora on June 8.

“The Executive Committee of the 19th Filoil Ecooil Preseason Cup has been informed of Ateneo de Manila University’s decision to withdraw from competing for the remainder of the tournament,” the league said in a statement.

“Upon continuous discussions and as confirmed with the University’s athletic director Mr. Emmanuel Fernandez, it was deemed appropriate to grant their request out of compassion following the tragic incident,” it added.

Ateneo has only played once in the ongoing preseason meet, beating the Adamson University Soaring Falcons, 72-52, in their opener on June 6.

Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin has since apologized, but the families of the players are still seeking accountability.
