Metro Manila, Philippines – A sibling tit for tat.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. dismissed claims by his sister, Senator Imee Marcos, that there were plans to suspend elections and extend terms of elected officials, calling it a “perfect example” of fake news.
Speaking to reporters during his state visit to Japan, Marcos said there were no discussions within the administration on a so-called “no election” in 2028.
“I don’t know. She should fire her staffer who gave her that information,” Marcos said.
“The truth of the matter is we have never at any point even spoken about this anywhere with anyone at any time,” he added.
Marcos called it misinformation.
“That’s a perfect example,” he said, adding that false information can harm the public and those spreading it.
“Fake news hurts everyone. Not only those that fake news is attacking, but also those who are purveying that fake news,” Marcos said.
The president said misinformation has broader consequences.
“Fake news is a corrosive influence in all sectors of society,” he said.
Senator Imee alleged there were efforts to push constitutional changes that could lead to the suspension of elections and extension of officials’ terms.
