Metro Manila, Philippines – Former Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said the Philippines is expected to be among the first countries to receive support under Japan’s new regional energy financing initiative.
Kishida, speaking during a press briefing on April 30, said details of the program are still being finalized with partner countries but signaled Manila’s priority status.
“I am expecting that the Philippines will be one of the first countries to receive assistance under this framework,” he said.
The initiative forms part of Japan’s ¥1.5 trillion (about $10 billion) funding package aimed at supporting energy and economic projects across Asia, particularly under the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC).
Kishida said discussions are ongoing on how the funds will be allocated.
“Specific details will be discussed among the countries involved,” he said.
The funding is expected to support projects that strengthen energy security while promoting economic growth and decarbonization in the region.
He also noted that 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Philippines, expressing hope for deeper cooperation.
Further discussions on the initiative are expected in the coming months, including during a planned visit by Marcos to Japan.
