DOH: Firecracker-related injuries rise to 75

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 27) — The Department of Health (DOH) reported 23 injuries related to firecrackers and fireworks as of 6 a.m. on Wednesday, bringing the total count over the last six days to 75.

According to the department’s latest data, the 23 new cases involved individuals with an age range between 6 to 55 years old.

DOH said 14 of the incidents were caused by illegal fireworks.

The new cases include two new amputations, both involving the illegal Pla-pla lit by male teenagers who lost their fingers.

\”Illegal fireworks are to blame for about six out of every ten cases,\” the advisory said.

DOH said one previous amputation case was misreported and the total number of amputations this holiday season rose to six.

Meanwhile, East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC) Spokesperson Dr. John Paul Ner said their facility still has not treated any firecracker-related injury as of Dec. 27.

Ner told CNN Philippines’ The Source that the hospital only recorded such cases on Dec. 31 and New Year’s Day itself in 2022.

Ner added that the EAMC recorded only eight cases of firecracker-related injuries during the whole monitoring period last year, and only tallied four for the same period in 2021 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of the 75 total cases, the department said six out of every ten cases come from the capital region, followed by Central Luzon (12%), and the Ilocos Region (8%).

DOH recorded 24 injuries related to firecrackers and fireworks the day after Christmas.
