Manila (CNN Philippines, December 14) — The Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (PISTON) pushed through with another transport strike on Thursday as a protest against the Dec. 31 franchise consolidation deadline under the government’s public utility vehicle modernization program.
In Quezon City, there were fewer jeepneys on the road, prolonging the waiting game for commuters. One commuter said he had been waiting for 15 minutes when he usually just waits a few minutes to get a ride.
PISTON announced on Monday its two-day strike, saying it may be extended depending on developments.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the Dec. 31 deadline will not be extended as 70% of operators have already consolidated. The number includes all public utility jeepneys, UV Express, minibuses, and public utility buses nationwide.
Marcos said the government \”cannot let the minority cause further delays\” since this would affect stakeholders.
PISTON debunked this claim, saying 70% of traditional jeepneys alone have yet to meet the requirements for modernization.
The transport group also set up a camp in front of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board Central Office in Quezon City and will stay there until their demands are met.
About 100,000 drivers and operators are expected to join the strike.
