Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 6) — Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri calls for increased police presence in Misamis Occidental following the killing of a radio broadcaster on Sunday.

“When you’re talking about political killings, unfortunately Misamis Occidental still has to figure out how to control these politically motivated killings,” Zubiri told CNN Philippines’ The Source on Monday. “I think the president, through the regional director, through the PNP, should really put a large presence of our Philippine National Police force in that province.”

Radio broadcaster Juan Jumalon, also known as DJ Johnny Walker, was shot dead on Sunday while he was airing live in his home in Barangay Don Bernardo A. Neri in Calamba town at 5:35 a.m.

The gunman entered Jumalon’s residence, saying he had an urgent announcement to make regarding a missing wallet and key. Upon entering the studio, he shot the anchorman in the head, took his necklace, and then fled.

The suspects used a motorcycle to escape.

Jumalon was pronounced dead on arrival at the Calamba District Hospital.

Zubiri condemned the killing, adding that those behind the crime should be apprehended as soon as possible. He also urged President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to form a task force to end the killings of journalists in the country.

Jumalon is the second journalist killed this year and the fourth under the Marcos administration.
