
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 25) — Five people were killed in General Nakar, Quezon following a landslide in Sitio Angelo, Brgy. Umiray on Tuesday night due to continuous rains, local authorities said.
“Nakaranas ng madalas na pag-ulan noong mga nakaraang araw ang ilang bahagi ng bayan ng General Nakar, kung kaya’t itinaas ng DOST PAG-ASA ang alerto sa banta ng pagbaha o landslide dahil sa paglambot ng lupa dulot ng ulan,” the local government of General Nakar said in a Facebook post on Wedneday.
[Translation: We experienced continuous rains for days in parts of General Nakar, that’s why the DOST PAG-ASA (Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration) raised the alert for possible flooding and landslide due to ground saturation.]
The landslides occurred at the Sierra Madre mountain range, near the boundaries of General Nakar in Quezon, Doña Aurora Trinidad in Bulacan, and Aurora province, according to reports.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the victims were found through the joint effort of the local residents and the 2nd Infantry Division of the Philippine Army and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), officials said.
Four of the fatalities were already identified while the fifth is still being identified, they also said.
Local authorities are still conducting search and rescue operations.
Meanwhile, the local government of General Nakar is now coordinating with other government agencies to conduct necessary measures to assist families affected.
