Government corporation regulator seeks over ₱300-M budget for 2024

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 6) — The regulatory body for government-owned and controlled corporations (GOCCs) on Wednesday appealed for more funding next year to better do its job.

The Governance Commission for GOCCs (GCG) is asking ₱168 million more from the ₱210 million approved by the Department of Budget and Management for 2024.

\”We will still be able to perform our mandate, but the extent and level to which we can perform the same of course will be diminished,\” said GCG director Johann Barcena during a hearing by the Senate finance subcommittee.

GCG monitors and evaluates performances of GOCCs.

\”We are requesting an additional budget, for example, for local travels so we can conduct onsite validations of the accomplishments,\” Barcena said. \”Without this budget then we’ll be relying solely on paper submissions of GOCCs and report the accomplishments based solely on such submissions.\”

The GCG also noted that the additional budget is needed for the hiring of more personnel, upgrading of information and communication technology facilities, and other operational expenses.
