PNP to recover retirement benefits of ex-cop in gun-toting viral video

Wilfredo Gonzales, the driver seen in the viral video, held a press conference with the Quezon City police district on Aug 27.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 4) — After a public backlash for brandishing a firearm on a cyclist, a former police officer in a viral video may be forced to return his retirement benefits to the Philippine National Police (PNP), an official said on Monday.

PBGen Nino David Rabaya, director of the PNP Retirement and Benefits Administration Service, said the police force is preparing to go after Wilfredo Gonzales for “overpayment of his pension.”

“As a matter of procedure, we are already preparing the demand letter for patrolman Gonzales to return the money,” he said in a briefing.

Police records show Gonzales had a case of grave misconduct while in active service in 2006. The order for his dismissal was only issued in 2017.

Gonzales reached the mandatory retirement age of 56 in 2016.

Rabaya said Gonzales secured a three-year lump sum pension for 2016-2019. But when the PNP received the dismissal order from the National Police Commission, the monthly pension “was not anymore activated.”

“So basically he is not anymore receiving pension from us,” he said.

Rabaya said a civil case would be filed against Gonzales if he fails to return the money.
