Pimentel: AFP should focus on acquiring more surface vessels not submarines

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 21) — Senate Minority Leader Koko Pimentel on Monday said the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) should strengthen its capabilities by acquiring more surface vessels.

In an interview with CNN Philippines’ The Source, Pimentel said he does not see the purpose of submarines during operations usually done in the country.

“I’m very much against the idea because I do not see how a submarine can help us resupply any of our outpost… during disaster periods to deliver relief goods,” he said. “It’s just what they call a ‘bling bling’ because it has become a trend in our area.”

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said last May that the government plans to purchase a submarine, but he noted that it is a “very large” commitment as it involves training, equipment, and “quite significant” operational requirements.

The Department of National Defense said last year that the acquisition of a submarine is not yet a priority due to budget constraints.

Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri in a statement on Monday said there is a need to amend the government procurement law to expedite the process of purchasing equipment that will improve the country’s defense capabilities.

He also pushed for the passage of Senate Bill No. 315 or the proposed Philippine Defense Industry Development Act that seeks to promote the local production of defense equipment and material.

Early this month, the China Coast Guard (CCG) fired water cannon at Philippine vessels while on a resupply mission to BRP Sierra Madre on Ayungin Shoal.
