SWS: 10.4% of Filipino families experience hunger

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 3) — About 10.4% of Filipino families experienced involuntary hunger, or being hungry and not having anything to eat, at least once in the past three months, according to a survey by the Social Weather Stations (SWS).

The survey released Wednesday showed that the June 2023 hunger rate was higher than the 9.8% recorded in March but lower than the 11.8% logged in December 2022.

\”The 0.6-point rise in Overall Hunger between March 2023 and June 2023 was due to increases in Metro Manila and Balance Luzon, combined with a steady percentage in the Visayas and a sharp decline in Mindanao,\” the SWS said.

According to the pollster, the incidence of hunger rose by 5.0 points in Metro Manila (10.7% to 15.7%) and rose by 2.6 points in Balance Luzon areas (8.7 to 11.3%).

SWS also noted that the values in the Visayas hardly changed (9.7% to 9:3%) while the rates in Mindanao fell by 5.4 points (11.7% to 6.3%).

The survey was conducted from June 28 to July 1 via face-to-face interviews with 1,500 adult Filipinos.
